چکیده

The Insect Telepresence project combines expertise from the robotics and human-computer interaction communities to create a robot exhibit that enables telepresence in scale. The underlying mission of this work is educational: to promote appreciation for insect life and small-scale complexity through exploration of live insect colonies. In this article we describe the robot hardware and software used to bring students face-to-face with insects. We also summarize the formal HCI methods used to design and evaluate the Insect Telepresence robot. The complete working exhibit, now installed as a permanent robot-entomology station at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, is presented in words and pictures.

Comparing Video, Avatar, and Robot Mediated Communication: Pros and Cons of Embodiment

In recent years, studies have begun on robot conferencing as a new telecommunication medium. In robot conferencing, people talk with a remote conversation partner through teleoperated robots which present the bodily motions of the partner with a physical embodiment. However, the effects of physical embodiment on distant communication had not yet been demonstrated. In this study, to find the eff...

Physical Embodiment Can Produce Robot Operator’s Pseudo Presence

Recent studies have focused on humanoid robots for improving distant communication. When a user talks with a remote conversation partner through a humanoid robot, the user can see the remote partner’s body motions with physical embodiment but not the partner’s current appearance. The physical embodiment existing in the same room with the user is the main feature of humanoid robots, but the effe...

Do teleoperated androids take tele-embodiment too far?

Maretta Morovitz Tufts University 200 Boston Avenue Medford, MA 02155 USA [email protected] Abstract We explore the theoretical motivations for and empirically-assessed perceptions of teleoperated androids for telepresence. In particular, we consider the affordances of their physical embodiment, as well as the adverse effects (owing to the uncanny valley) of such highly humanlike robot...

Telepresence Interaction by Touching Live Video Images

This paper presents a telepresence interaction framework and system based on touch screen and telepresence robot technologies. The system is composed of a telepresence robot and tele-interactive devices in a remote environment (presence space), the touching live video image user interface (TIUI) used by an operator (user) in an operation space, and wireless network connecting the two spaces. A ...

Studying the Influence of Handheld Robotic Media on Social Communications

This paper describes research issues on social robotic telepresence using “Elfoid.” It is a portable tele-operated humanoid that is designed to transfer individuals’ presence to remote places at anytime, anywhere, to provide a new communication style in which individuals talk with persons in remote locations in such a way that they feel each other’s presence. However, it is not known how people...
